North Vancouver House by Scott & Scott Architects in Vancouver, Canada

North Vancouver House by Scott & Scott Architects

The North Vancouver House is a complete refurbishment of a mid-century modern house located just below Grouse Mountain in northern Vancouver, Canada. The renovation was carried out by the Canadian studio Scott & Scott Architects who agreed with the owners’ interest in respecting the original details of the house, while at the same time, complementing it with traditional features and materials.

North Vancouver House by Scott & Scott Architects in Vancouver, Canada

Working with the architects to locate a suitable property for a new home the clients purchased a 1950s post and beam house located near the base of Grouse Mountain. The house, while extensively renovated over the years, had a modest scale, well proportioned rooms and a strong connection to the wooded and mature yard.

The project consists of the design and construction of the restoration and renovation of the 150 sq. m house. The living space was stripped of embellishments, services rationalized and the enclosed stair was replaced with a new open stair of steel and fir which allows for the light from the second floor hall window to connect with the ground floor.

The project draws from the architects and clients (two history professors) shared interest in traditional materials and respect for the original details of the house.

To brighten the spaces the douglas fir beams were lye washed and the structural decking was finished with a cloth applied pigmented oil. The living spaces were reduced to the structural shell, the walls were repaired and finished in a natural lime based whitewash and the floors ground and troweled.

The materials used were selected for their contrasting strengths and minimally finished using traditional methods that are maintainable and acquire visible signs of use over time. The steel stair and fireplace frame were finished with wood stove paste and bowling alley wax and the cabinetry was lye washed and sealed with soap.

With minimal change to the configuration of the spaces, the functional storage was consolidated into two douglas fir plywood cabinet blocks to maximize the open spaces while providing concealed storage for the living, entry and kitchen.

The kitchen was crafted of solid ash and designed for the open storage of the owners collection of studio pottery. While open and light in section, the joinery was detailed to structurally bear the weight of the 800kg marble counter monolith which was milled from a block the architects selected from the Hisnet Inlet quarry located on Vancouver Island near their own alpine cabin.

R+P House by ADI Arquitectura y Diseño Interior

The R+P House is a stunning contemporary residence designed by the Mexico-based studio ADI Arquitectura y Diseño InteriorThis two-story residence is located in the city of Aguascalientes in Mexico and it boasts 3,767 square feet of living space for its residents. It is designed for a 5-member family where 3 members are beloved pets.
The exterior design is dictated by the irregular fan-shaped land, oriented south to north. Its minimalist, contemporary look sets it apart from the rest of the homes in the area.

R+P House by ADI Arquitectura y Diseño Interior in Aguascalientes City, Mexico

Located in a residential area in the northern part of Aguascalientes city, R+P house is developed for a family of 5, where 3 of them are pets.

In an irregular fan shaped land and with a south-north orientation. The architectonic program is resolved in two floors.

Given the land characteristics and based on the customer’s requirements of having ortogonal spaces, this project is conceptualized as two prismatic volumes aligned with the colindancias laterales and connected by the vestibule that resolves the circulaciones.

On the first floor we can find the social areas: garage, kitchen, living room, dining room and Talita, Hanna and Job’s bedroom that has a direct access to the garden terrace.

On the first level, the master bedroom, studio, laundry room and TV room.

The master bedroom and terrace have a view of the back garden, opening a space between the garage’s volume to give it a south orientation.

The main vestibule is the articulator axis of the whole project, connecting both prismas, all the rooms are connected through a double height space and a bridge that unites the upper floor.

The material selection was determined by its practicality and ease of cleaning, in a house where pets are a member of the family.

House in Ranzo by Wespi de Meuron in Ranzo, Switzerland

Project: House in Ranzo
Architects: Wespi de Meuron
Location: Ranzo, Switzerland
Area: 1,367 sqft
Photographs by: Hannes Henz

House in Ranzo by Wespi de Meuron

Wespi de Meuron is an architecture studio that we’ve stumbled upon before. In particular, we’ve featured their Concrete House and House in Brissago projects on our site.
Today, we’ve got another one of their contemporary homes to feature on our site. The House in Ranzo is a minimal interpretation of local, historical references into a contemporary dwelling. It is a compact 1,367 square foot home covered in traditional natural gray plaster with a pergola and courtyard walls that form a Mediterranean character.

House in Ranzo by Wespi de Meuron in Ranzo, Switzerland

The project works with references to the historical architectural culture of the place and interprets them anew.

The traditional natural grey plaster of the façade associated with the simple cube of the modern house detracts itself from a precise temporal assignment.

This house is closely linked to the historical paths from the lake to the village. The terrace with a mountainside courtyard wall, a long bench and natural stone paving has Mediterranean character. The pergola place on the old barn is directly connected with a steep staircase to the house and forms a counterpoint to the new building
